About Captiva Island
Captiva Island is about 6 miles long and only about 1/3 mile wide at its widest point. It is part of unincorporated Lee County. While it is not covered by the laws governing the City of Sanibel,
it is tightly regulated through its own controls. Captiva is essentially three different areas: the Southern third has estate type zoning whereby the property sizes must be at least an acre of land or more; the middle third is a mixture of resorts, including 'Tween Waters Inn,
the "village area", some condominiums and single family dwellings; the Northern third is South Seas Plantation, which is a full resort facility featuring condominiums and single family homes covering 330 acres. It has a nine hole golf course, deep water marina,
several restaurants, general store, shopping, trolley service, convention facilities, and is considered a world class resort.
Captiva, like most barrier islands, suffers from beach erosion. The Captiva Erosion Prevention District has implemented an ongoing beach re-nourishment program which taxes property owners on a pro-rata basis. This, together with county, state, and federal money,
has funded the beach re-nourishment. Our Island beaches, for the most part, are stable, although there is erosion in some areas.
