About Fort Myers

Established in 1886, Fort Myers is the historical and governmental hub of Lee County along the scenic shoreline of the Caloosahatchee River. Sporting the youngest population in Lee County with a median age of 32, the City of Palms is also home to the historic winter residences of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. The Downtown Waterfront district is undergoing a renovation currently with new restaurants, apartments, and artistic venues providing energy and growth.

Fort Myers boasts an exceptional lifestyle with a superb climate, magnificent beaches, and abundant recreation opportunities. Money magazine ranked Fort Myers-Cape Coral as the 6th Best Place to Live in America in its ranking of 300 metro areas in the United States. According to the National Golf Foundation, Fort Myers ranks 5th in the nation for golfer-to-holes ratios. There are more than 60 golf courses throughout the county, 27 of which are open to the public.

As a gateway to the Gulf of Mexico, Fort Myers is rich in history and ambiance. The year round pleasures range from sun-washed beaches and waterways, to tropical gardens, endless access to water sports, museums, historical tours, theater,golf and nature walks.

In the 2000 US Census, Fort Myers has a population of 48,200, with Cape Coral at 102,290 and Fort Myers Beach at 6,560.
